Here is a very intersting quote by Ed Leedskalnin on education I came across from http://www.leedskalnin.com/

”You know we receive an education in the schools from books. All those books that people became educated from twenty-five years ago, are wrong now, and those that are good now, will be wrong again twenty-five years from now. So if they are wrong then, they are also wrong now, and the one who is educated from the wrong books is not educated, he is misled. All books that are written are wrong, the one who is not educated cannot write a book and the one who is educated, is really not educated but he is misled and the one who is misled cannot write a book which is correct.

The misleading began when our distant ancestors began to teach their descendants. You know they knew nothing but they passed their knowledge of nothing to the coming generations and it went so innocently that nobody noticed it. That is why we are not educated.

Now I will tell you what education is according to my reasoning. An educated person is one whose senses are refined. We are born as brutes, we remain and die as the same if we do not become polished. But all senses do not take polish. Some are to coarse to take it. The main base of education is one’s “self-respect”. Any one lacking self-respect cannot be educated. The main bases of self-respect is the willingness to learn, to do only the things that are good and right, to believe only in the things that can be proved, to possess appreciation and self control.

Now, if you lack willingness to learn, you will remain as a brute and if you do things that are not good and right, you will be a low person, and if you believe in things that cannot be proved, any feeble minded person can lead you, and if you lack appreciation, it takes away the incentive for good doing and if you lack self control you will never know the limit.

So all those lacking these characteristics in their makeup are not educated.”

I recently read the book titled The New Media Monopoly: A Completely Revised and Updated Edition With Seven New Chapters published in 2004 by Beacon Press and written by Ben H. Bagdikian. I think it is well worth the read and provides some interesting perspectives even though it is now slightly dated due to the continued rise of the internet.

Some interesting quotes provided in the book by past leaders in the United States of America:

“Nothing can now be believed, which is seen in a newspaper”

-Thomas Jefferson, 1807

“A people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. A popular government without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy or perhaps both.”

-James Madison

“The first essential in determining how to deal with the great industrial corporations is knowledge of the facts.”

-Theodore Roosevelt

As touched on in the book by Ben H. Bagdikian in The New Media Monopoly scholars and universities today are faced with challenges of gaining access to important information

“Access to the most important literature in intellectual and scientific journals is increasingly threatened by great leaps in prices demanded by a global triumvirate of media monopolies in academic journals. Three dominant companies – Reed Elsevier and Wolters Kluwer in the Netherlands and John Wiley in the United States – can do this because each has the ultimate paradise of a monopoly – a captive market”

Also touched in the book is the tobacco industry and cigarette advertising. This illustrates the importance of recognizing how advertising can shape the content presented in the specific medium whether it be internet, television (TV), or magazine.

“In magazines that accept cigarette advertising I was unable to find a single article, in several years of publication that would have given readers any clear notion of the nature and extent of the medical and social havoc wreaked by the cigarette-smoking habit.”

-As quoted by R.C. Smith in Columbia Journalism Review on a study of magazine content for 7 years after 1970.

Near the ending of his book Ben H. Bagdikian says

“When the United States defeated Japan in World War II and established an American administration to reconstruct the old Imperial Government, it mandated that Japan create a noncommercial, unpoliticized broadcast system…because the American democracy forces declared that no modern democracy should be without one…. The five huge corporate conglomerates in the U.S. do not want greater political and social diversity because it would dilute their audiences and thereby reduce the fees they can demand for the commercials that produce their unprecedented profit levels….They have been a most powerful force in shifting the political spectrum of the United States to the right.”

Ben H. Bagdikian later says

“President Theodore Roosevelt, a Republican, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a Democrat, demonstrated that conglomerates and monopolies harm the common good and are not beyond the reach of law.“

I encourage you to remember that various independent government organizations were created to help prevent monopolies such as the Federal Communications Commission http://www.fcc.gov/ and the Federal Trade Commission http://www.ftc.gov/.

Steven M. Greer, M.D., over at the Disclosure Project has some interesting comments on the subject in his article titled Media Play located at http://disclosureproject.org/docs/pdf/MediaPlay.pdf

“The truth is that we have free media – so long as it is inconsequential… Sure, you can say and write anything – so long as it does not get placed in front of the masses in an honest way….Big Media must be distinguished from the media in general, insofar as the former is utterly corrupted and the latter is sequestered into spheres of limited influence and significance. Mass retail media …and the like are less free on anything of real significance than the media of many third world countries – or even communist China.”

In recent previous posts I have discussed and illustrated with figures about the increasingly high costs of college and education in the United States.

http://blog.teethremoval.com/astroturfing-and-how-your-thoughts-are-being-manipulated-by-corporate-interests/

This is an extreme and real problem for the youth and young people today. Students graduating from medical school have an average debt of around $158,000 and the average debt of those graduating from undergraduate college is over $27,000 in the U.S.

I have discussed how this is causing a larger and larger amount of students to go into service industries such as the financial sector which do not create real value for society and also to pursue jobs they are not particularly passionate about.

This is a very serious issue for those young people today and they should be outraged that the older generations in America have left them in shambles. In fact there is even a campaign called “Our Time” Which is “Standing Up For All of Us Under 30.” http://www.ourtime.org/

An excellent over 1 hour long documentary has recently (May 2011) been put out by the National Inflation Association and is embeded below which covers many of the issues facing the youth in today’s society. It is well worth the watch for anyone considering college and challenges you to rethink your thoughts of the United States as the global leader.

The video may feel like it has an anti-education tone. Just to be clear I am currently 25 and have graduated college and have a master of science degree and believe education is very very important.

However, the current amount of money that is being asked of for the average student to take out as a loan’s is absolutely insane along with the current tuition inflation. Of course you can pursue scholarships to help with the cost but there is a lot of competition for these.

The video may be seen by some as biased but it gets you to think. It also warns of the possible upcoming U.S. hyperinflation and urges the youth of today to buy physical gold and silver.

I encourage all of those pursuing higher level education to demand for affordable costs.

For all those who oppose be warned, http://news.ourtime.org/why-ceos-need-to-hire-more-young-people

Generation Y is the most highly productive generation thus far. We were brought up to be overachievers, and started working hard since high school or even younger. They are the most educated generation ever produced and want to put their skills to use. Not to mention their knowledge of marketing and social media is second to none.

Unfortunately I am beginning to think that the ballooning out of control cost of higher education is a scheme designed by large corporations and special interests so that things such as medical procedures promoted on shaky scientific ground and continuing to lower the definition of various diseases so that more and more drugs can be sold will become more and more the norm since the doctor will be an indentured servant to their debt.

The video of college conspiracy above also has a very interesting take on the law field around the 40 minute mark which discusses how a large number of politicians in Washington are lawyers. The video says

[lawyers who become politicians] go to Washington in order to pass as many new harmful and destructive laws and regulations as possible in order to provide enough work for all of their lawyer friends.
