A Healthy Headache Diet

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine have explored two different approaches to preventing headaches with diet. The first approach is to eliminate foods and beverages known to trigger headaches. The second approach is to follow a diet whose very composition may prevent headaches. The conclusions were reached after performing an exhaustive literature review of more than 180 research studies on the subject of migraine and diet. The first thing to eliminate in your day to prevent headache is the morning cup of joe or coffee in the morning. This is because too much caffeine can lead to a caffeine withdrawal headache. The researchers say that no more than 400 milligrams daily of coffee should be used and one cup of 125 milligrams of coffee is the maximum amount a headache suffered should have. Large amounts of […]

Modern Britons Have More Gum Disease than Roman Britons

A study of skulls at the Natural History Museum by King’s College London has shown that the Roman British population from 200 to 400 AD appears to have had less gum disease than we have today. Gum disease is also known as periodontitis and has been covered before numerous times on this blog. The researchers examined 303 skulls from a Roman-British burial ground in Dorset for evidence of dental disease. Around 5% of the skulls showed signs of moderate to severe gum disease compared to today’s population which shows around 15 to 30% of adults have gum disease. Many of the Roman-British skulls showed signs of infections and abscesses and around half had caries (cavities). In addition the skulls showed extensive tooth wear from a young age likely due to their diet. The researchers say that Roman-British population did not […]

Nutrition is Important for Oral Health

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has published a position paper on oral health and nutrition which looks at the current research literature to support that nutrition is an important component of oral health. The paper promotes the view that dietitian nutritionists should collaborate with oral health care professionals to help in disease prevention. The paper states “Oral health and nutrition have a synergistic multidirectional relationship. Oral infectious diseases, as well as acute, chronic, and terminal systemic diseases with oral manifestations impact functional ability to eat as well as diet and nutrition status. Likewise, nutrition and diet can affect the development and integrity of the oral cavity as well as the progression of oral diseases.” The paper was published in the the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in May 2013, and is available for download at http://www.eatright.org/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&ItemID=8426. Dietary Goals of the United States

I have previously written about  Dr. McDougall through finding his newsletter in a Google Search where he discussed how to protect yourself from abusive doctors. See http://blog.teethremoval.com/how-to-protect-yourself-from-abusive-doctors/. Earlier this year I also discussed in a post some of Dr. McDougalls thought’s on Food, Children, and Diet where he wrote to governor Rick Scott of Florida claiming that various food industries are engaged in child abuse. In his newsletter from October 2012, he discussed former democratic senator George McGovern and his McGovern report from 1977 where guideline for eating were developed, http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2012nl/oct/mcgovern.htm. Dr. McDougall says that the McGovern report says “…there is a great deal of evidence and it continues to accumulate, which strongly implicates and, in some instances, proves that the major causes of death and disability in the United States are related to the diet we eat…What are the […]

Food, Children, and Diet

I became aware of Dr. McDougall through finding his newsletter in a Google Search where he discussed how to protect yourself from abusive doctors. See http://blog.teethremoval.com/how-to-protect-yourself-from-abusive-doctors/ I also wanted to highlight some of the other articles and discussions that Dr. McDougall writes about. He is a practicing doctor in Florida and in April 2012, wrote a letter to governor Rick Scott of Florida regarding child abuse http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2012nl/apr/abuse.htm. In the article he states “In compliance with Florida state law, I am filing this report about widespread child abuse caused by various food industries working directly with branches of US government. These food organizations are actively involved in acts of commission and omission that result in harm, potential for harm, and/or the threat of harm to children. The health consequences of their various business activities amount to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse […]
