Is Hashimoto’s Encephalopathy Related to New Daily Persistent Headache?

An interesting article titled “New Daily Persistent Headache As A Presenting Symptom Of Hashimoto’s Encephalopathy,” is written by Daniel E. Jacome and located over at http://www.webmedcentral.com/wmcpdf/Article_WMC00960.pdf. The article discusses Hashimoto’s encephalopathy (HE) which is a rare autoimmune neurological disorder and how patients with this disorder may present with a headache characteristic of new daily persistent headache or atypical hemicranias continua. Patients of HE are said to have elevated serum titers of thyroid microsomal and antithyroglobulin antibodies. A reference is made to a past case of a woman who had such elevated antibodies and also a left sided headache and aphasia. The current article describes a case of a 50 year old man who had such elevated antibodies and also a persistent daily left sided headache with aphasia. Note that his brain MRI and MRA was normal. In the article it … Read more

Chewing Gum Linked to Headaches

An interesting study and findings regarding a link between headaches and gum chewing has come from Tel Aviv University. The article was published in Pediatric Neurology and looked at 30 patients between 6 and 19 with chronic headache and who were big gum chewers. The patients were told to stop chewing gum. After 1 month, nineteen of the patients had their headache go away and 7 additional patients in the group had a decrease in the severity and frequency of their headaches. Twenty six of the patients were then told to go back to chewing gum like they used to and they all said their previous symptoms returned within days. The researchers speculate that temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction may be the likely trigger at bay. The researchers believe that TMJ overuse is causing the headaches. Other possibilities were suggested such as … Read more

Blood Levels in Fat Cells May Help Predict Migraine

A new study appearing in the journal Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain, looks at people experiencing two to twelve migraine headaches a month. In this study researchers found that measuring a fat-derived protein called adiponectin before and after migraine treatment is useful in revealing if headache patients felt pain relief or not. The researchers of the study are hopeful that finding this potential biomarker for migraine of adiponectin may be used for developing new and better migraine treatment options. Finding better treatment options for migraine sufferers is lucrative because roughly 36 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches which can last longer than 4 hours at a time. Women are three times to get migraines when compared to men. In the study the researchers collected blood from 20 women who visited 3 different headache clinics for an acute … Read more

Migraine Associated with Changes in Structure of Arteries

A recent study by researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has shown the arteries supplying blood flow to the brain is more likely to be incomplete in people who experience migraine. The arterial supply of blood to the brain is protected by numerous connections between the major arteries which is known as the circle of Willis. Those who experience migraine and especially migraine with aura are more likely than those without migraine to be missing some components of the circle of Willis. These structural changes in the circle of Willis are something people are born with. In this study, which appeared in PLOS ONE, the researchers suggest that these structural alterations of the blood supply to the brain may increase susceptibility to changes in cerebral blood flow, which may contribute to abnormal neuronal activity … Read more

Migraine May Alter Brain Structure Permanently

An article appearing in Neurology, explores the effects of a migraine on the brain’s structure on a long term basis. The study suggests that migraine may permanently alter brain structure which is counter to previously held beliefs that migraine has no long term consequence for the brain.  For example, see the post titled Are Migraine Related Changes Related to Impaired Cognition? where a study concluded that women with migraine have no long term effects of cognition over time. See also the post Do Migraines Lead to Cognitive Decline? In the current study, researchers explored 6 population based studies and 13 clinic based studies to determine if people who have migraine had an increased risk of brain lesions, brain volume changes, or other abnormalities as measured from an MRI of the brain. The researchers found that migraine with aura increased the … Read more
