Rethinking dental insurance

An interesting article titled “Time to rethink dental “insurance”” written by Marko Vujicic appears in the Nov. 2017 issue of JADA (vol. 147 issue 12, pp. 907–910). The article explorers some issues surrounding the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in the U.S. and it’s impact and medical insurance and dental insurance and argues that dental insurance should be combined into dental insurance. It says that the percentage of Americans lacking health insurance coverage has fallen to 9.2%, which is lower than pre-ACA levels. In addition more Americans than before now now have a personal physician, health care costs are growing at much lower rates, and amount out-of-pocket health spending is declining. Can Dentistry Learn from the National Basketball Association (NBA)?

An interesting article titled “What the ADA can learn from the NBA” appears in the July 2015 issue of JADA by Marko Vujicic. The article discusses how the National Basketball Association (NBA) implemented some changes that are relevant to health care workers. What the NBA did was start reviewing and evaluating all referee decisions during the last 2 minutes of any close games. The NBA wanted to be more transparent, more accountable, and show that most calls by a referee are correct. The NBA publicly discloses the results of their review of the calls of any close games. No longer do they wait until controversy causes them to act and instead are proactive instead of reactive. Will Health Care Reform Result in More Dental Visits

An interesting article titled “Health care reform brings new opportunities,” appears in the April 2014 edition of JADA written by Marko Vujicic (vol. 145, no. 4, pp. 381-382). The article discusses how health care reform in the U.S., specifically the Affordable Care Act (ACA) may help bring about new opportunities for dentists. The article opens by discussing how the U.S. spends more money on health care than any other developed country and there is little measurable benefit in terms of health outcomes, patient satisfaction, and access to care. Anti Affordable Care Act (Anti ObamaCare) Ads with Uncle Sam

In the United States, with the ObamaCare exchanges set to go live on Tuesday and the looming government shutdown also set for Tuesday, I wanted to draw your attention to some recent ads you may have missed. Now I came across these ads watching Real time with Bill Maher last week, where Bill plays one of the ads on his program and discusses it. The videos are designed to deter young people from signing up for the ObamaCare exchanges and do so by featuring a young man and a young woman about to undergo prostate and pelvic exams. The ads are from from Generation Opportunity, a Virginia-based group with ties to the Koch brothers.
