Water Test to Detect Fluoride

Researchers at the University of Bath’s Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies and the Water Innovation and Research Centre (WIRC) have developed a simple color changing test to detect fluoride in drinking water. The researches believe this can help prevent bone disease and fluorosis in developing countries. This is because high levels of fluoride can weaken bones, leading to fluorosis. There is some conflicting information about when children should start using fluoride toothpaste. Studies have shown that 30% to 50% of U.S. teens are consuming energy drinks, and up to 62% are consuming at least one sports drink per day. A study published in the May/June 2012 issue of General Dentistry, the journal of the Academy of General Dentistry, found that an alarming increase in the consumption of sports and energy drinks, especially among adolescents, is causing irreversible damage to teeth — specifically, the high acidity levels in the drinks erode tooth enamel, the glossy outer layer of the tooth. Large Amounts of Fluoride Consumed by Young Children Leads to Fluorosis

A recent study looked at the role of fluoride in young children. It was found that young children who consume large amounts of fluoride through fluoridated water and beverages mixed with flouridated water as well as by swallowing toothpaste with fluoride have an increased chance of developing mild enamel fluorosis. The study noted that all of the fluorosis in the young children seen was mild and that they feel that the oral health of these young children was not adversely affected in anyway. If a child has mild enamel fluorosis there will be barely noticeable faint white lines or streaks on tooth enamel. The researchers used mothers of newborns from eight Iowa hospital postpartum wards between 1992 and 1995 which is known as the Iowa Fluoride Study.
