Food, Children, and Diet

I became aware of Dr. McDougall through finding his newsletter in a Google Search where he discussed how to protect yourself from abusive doctors. See https://blog.teethremoval.com/how-to-protect-yourself-from-abusive-doctors/

I also wanted to highlight some of the other articles and discussions that Dr. McDougall writes about.

He is a practicing doctor in Florida and in April 2012, wrote a letter to governor Rick Scott of Florida regarding child abuse http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2012nl/apr/abuse.htm. In the article he states

“In compliance with Florida state law, I am filing this report about widespread child abuse caused by various food industries working directly with branches of US government. These food organizations are actively involved in acts of commission and omission that result in harm, potential for harm, and/or the threat of harm to children. The health consequences of their various business activities amount to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of children.”

In the article Dr. McDougall discusses how meat and diary products are altering hormone levels in children. He says

“The normal age of human sexual maturity is between 16 and 19 years. The modern Western diet, based on meat and dairy products, is causing dramatic changes in human development, triggering the onset of precocious puberty at an average of 8 to 12 years, long before nature ever intended. “

Dr. McDougall goes on to say

“We live in a so-called “free society.” Terms such as “free speech,” “free enterprise,” and “free trade” are used to justify business behaviors that harm the weak and disadvantaged in our society. Under these rules the dairy industries’ right to advertise the purported benefits of calcium in their products, while hiding the seriousness of the artery-clogging fats, outweighs the rights of children to basic good health.”

Dr. McDougall advocates for a a starch-based diet with fruits and vegetables. His letter certainly is provocative.

Dr. McDougall discusses his diet recommendations and foods children can eat in a newsletter from September, 2012, http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2012nl/sep/children.htm.

In this article he says

“Food industries have built their customer bases with the marketing strategy of “unique positioning,” where each big business tries to make its food product stand apart by overly promoting one of its more plentiful nutrients. Their efforts have been very effective, and as a result, calcium has become synonymous with dairy foods, as has protein with meat, poultry and eggs, iron with beef, and essential omega-3 fats with fish. Without these animal-derived foods in their daily diets, the public, both lay and professional, has come to believe that people, and especially children, will suffer from deficiencies. These beliefs are scientifically untrue…”

Dr. McDougall offers perspectives that not what you typically find in the mainstream. I encourage you to explore his newsletter and articles to find out more if you are interested.
