New research shows that consuming polyunsaturated fatty acids can lower the risk of developing periodontitis. Periodontitis is a gum infection that can lead to tissue and bone loss around teeth.
The specific studies I am referring to found that n-3 fatty acid intake such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are inversely associated with periodontitis in a U.S. sample size of over 9,000 adults.
This is useful to know because it is quite easy to incorporate a supplement like fish oil in your diet. However, I do have issues with dietary supplements as they typically do not have to meet tough standards to make it on your local pharmacy store’s shelf. Therefore you need to be careful about which brand you may purchase.
There are also others ways to obtain polyunsaturated fatty acids such as by eating nuts, peanut butter, salmon, and margarine.
Hence this can be extended to the population as a whole and moderate levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids should be consumed by everyone to help lower periodontitis. This can be accomplished either through the use of a fish oil dietary supplement and/or by changing your diet.
Fish oil already has many other potential health benefits. These includes lowering the risk of certain cancers, helping to prevent cardiovascular problems, and lowering the risk of depression and suicide.

I think it’s interesting that certain substances can reduce the risk for a wide variety of ailments. I wonder when they will learn the specific reasons why the chance for periodontal disease goes down.
How come everything that tastes so bad is good for you. These same substances are supposedly good for your heart and lots of other areas.
well i hadn’t been to the dentist since 2007 and i went tuesday(october 4th) its october 6th i thought for sure my oral surgeon/dentist was going to tell me i had periodontal disease or bad gingivitis nope…the worst thing was the actual broken teeth and the removal…..odd maybe i can attribute fish oil to this? I’ve been taking it religiously since march when i joined up at the gym and i take about 12 1000 mg capsules of fish oil a day……hmmm
