When the researchers looked at the brain tissue, specifically the hippocampus (the brain’s “hard drive” for memory), they found:
- Cell Death: Tooth loss triggered a “pro-death” shift in genes, leading to the loss of neurons.
- Inflammation: The areas of the brain responsible for forming and storing memories (the CA1 and dentate gyrus) were inflamed and damaged.
- Physical Decline: Interestingly, a bad diet only affected one small part of the hippocampus, but tooth loss caused widespread damage to the key memory hubs.
